NYC, New York - Battery Park

Bookmark and Share
The area at the southern tip of Downtown Manhattan has undergone rapid urbanization and remodeling in the last few decades. The excavation works in the 1960s to build the deep foundations for the World Trade Center, destroyed by terrorists on 11 September, 2001, created enough granite blocks of earth to form 22 acres (9ha) of new land, which became home to the Battery Park City and the World Financial Center. In the Battery Park area, Castle Clinton originally stood on an island. Built in 1811 as one of several forts to defend New York Harbor, it is now part of Manhattan and used as a ferry ticket office.
The opening of new shops and cafes and the remodeling of the Battery Park public spaces have given the area a whole new lease of life and it is now on most visitors' tick list of sights to see. Northwest of Battery Park, you'll find a relatively new area of land known as Battery Park City, which was created by landfill. It's still pretty much a quiet district, though there has been plenty of development. This is home to two of New York's newer museums: the Museum of Jewish Heritage, which has been so successful that there are plans for an extension, and at 39 Battery Place is the Skyscraper Museum, which tells the fascinating story of the creation of all those famous tall buildings. On the south em tip of the city is the recently landscaped Robert Wagner Junior Park, which has a cafe and street vendors selling food and drink and is a wonderful place to sit and gaze at the harbour. To the north is the World Financial Center, which has four tower blocks and a full calendar of fairs and festivals. See the nearby Winter Garden, a glass-ceilinged public plaza decorated with palm trees.
